Aaaaaand it's over...

...for now.  The dark can idea was good but a little over complicated.  After all I have a phone which can record so this does the job.

I do have a few other ideas in mind and I will be planning these in a way that I can chip away at them and work on them as and when rather than doing it all at once.

So let's see if these even get off the ground.

I'm terrible at blogging.

Sucks not knowing enough about code...

Trying to edit code that you don't quite understand is fought with dangers and many errors, headaches and generally not getting anywhere fast.

That's pretty much it for the time being, nothing more to add other than every step I take at the moment is another one back.

I have found a couple of nice scripts which seem to do the job but when I try to combine them and add the overlay data it brakes the code, i get a headache, try to fix it, mess up the code then have to revert back to the original.

This should be easier than what it really is.

Update 000

Yes straight back to 0.

I am now back to square one... Why?  Because I like to do too much at once and jump in feet first.  Nothing out of the ordinary here.  I have been stuck on a particular issue where I have been unable to get the GPS to log on boot.  I can connect to the Pi and call the data manually and this works but just not automatically.

So whats next then.  Well I am going to plan things properly and take a systematic approach to the build.  The main thing is not to rely on what others have done all packaged up.  I have tried to use this and do not understand the code \ logic as I am not a programmer.

Also I have my own ideas on what I would like to see so this will form a part of what I look to achieve.

So its not all at a loss.  I have lots of info to go off its just now  case of putting it all together in my own package.

So things may take a little longer than I initially wanted and won't be working solely on this either.

I'll keep you all posted.

Update 1

OK so here is my first update.  It's going well!

OK so hardware as it stands is :

Raspberry Pi B+
RPi camera v1.3
Vg-172 USB GPS
16gb pendrive

What works?
Video recording and video log (this is to say when it's started/stopped recording and also when it has removed an old file.

GPS does work and locate however this is yet to be shown on the video.  I also need to see if there bus a way to keep logs also.

No I am no cider by any means so I am chopping and changing from a number of sources. I'm glad I have gotten this far in such a short amount of time (approx 2hrs) but there will be plenty more to fix / worry about once things start picking up.

For the time being though it's coming together. I need to do a real-world test and see how it performs.

Hello World

Welcome to Stop Start Projects.

Why the name?  Well it’s because I have a tendency to stop and start projects.  Too be honest this may eventually stop also.

So whats the point of this.
Well I have always been a fan of sharing information and if anyone has some inspiration from what I do and improves it then that can only be a good thing.  After all as already mentioned there is a chance that the project may stop anyway.

OK so whats the latest idea then?
It may be cheaper to purchase a purpose built system but I am looking to use a Raspberry Pi as a dash cam.  Why? because its cool.

I am not a coder by any means and its been a while since I did any type of linux administration so this may take a while.  I have a cheap and nasty dash cam at the moment and by cheap and nasty I truly mean this.  So the idea is to re-purpose a Pi that's just sitting around and turn it into something different.

For the project I will be using a:
  • B+
  • Pi Cam v1.3
  • USB GPS
  • 16gb USB Drive

The camera and GPS is currently on order and I am hoping that they will turn up tomorrow so that I can start building.
